so I've been checking out this guys biuld thread on a VWMS style golf.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4238503&page=5
it's getting intersting now that he has got to the transmission and the VWMS parts used.
he notes that VWMS always used the 02A 4wd trans case caus they are thicker/stronger.
anyone hear of this before?
he shows how the shift forks in the tranny have brass bushings instead of failure prone stock bearings.
pretty neat and just wandering if anyone else got trick stuff like this they know of or heard to post up.
gonna be building my own 02A soon and looking to make it as strong as I can.

nah,you can get a passat synchro trans from canada, and you figure some one can make the bushings, but yes the other parts are unobtainable here.
just wandering if anyone can confirm the synchro trans is thicker?

I live in Canada, and synchros are even rare up here.
I might see one every 6 months at best.

Best way to get one is to hit an run it, then buy it from the auction when its written off. Wink

why cant you buy the case new from the dealer? i would think you would be able to. gears you are probably fucked on, would have to get an aftermarket dog setup.

granted, shit is going to be exspensive. yet you get what you pay for in this instance. rally shit is allways overkill. i have an awd hyundai w/ evo 3 drivetrain in my front yard. car was an x pro class car from the 90's built by rod millen's crew chief. gear set alone is 14k. but dog boxes are so damn cool it is worth selling your first born and maybe your second.

Hell, Paul and I had to deal with one of those AWD boxes back in Sasquatch's house (aka NGP's barn/shed out back). Rolling Eyes

With all the trouble that day, we should have just taken that.

my thought is to pull a honda boy trick. weld and grind the case to get it to your desired thickness/strength. unless you wanna get baller and have a case cut from billet. who is hitting powerball and doing a run of those?

Some i sorta noticed when installing my new trans is that it was a brazilian casting... which looks like absolute shit - Poor cleanup, micro cracks all over by the bolt holes etc.
Not sure if there are german cast 02a's out there, but my stock trans looks ALOT different quality wise..
