Ok now that the 2002 racing season on the east coast is pretty much finished except a few test n tunes, if the weather is warm enough lets take a look back at the records and feets accomplished this year. Kevin Black in his 16v Turbo Scirocco claimed the title of North Americas fastest FWD Watercooled VW by running a 10.05 @ 142mph in the IDRC Event at Maple Grove Raceway. GTR Motorsports set a few different records for the VR6. Steve Oliveira became USA's fastest VR6, with 10.81 @ 128mph in his Turbo VR6 88 GTI, this was done on a STOCK block. Brian Kirchberger sponsored by Schimmel Performance and ATP MFG, became North Americas fast VW Jetta, with his ATP Turbo VR6, running 11.43 @ 125mph. As well as winning 1st place at an Imstar event and Runner up at another, while leading the points in Wild Street till the last 2 events of the season finishing 3rd overall. "Turbo" Lou Bertucceo in his EIP Sponsored Turbo VR6, became the USA's fastest MK3 VR6, by running 10.86 @ 123 mph, with no 3rd gear, and having problems in 5th causing him to slow to only 123. Based on his 107mph 1/8th he was on pace to trap 135+mph. "Proffessor" Nate Romero in his Race101.com 20/20 All-Motor Corrado, became North Americas fastest FWD Watercooled VW by running 11.43 @ 118mph. Also placed 1st at the IDRC, ATCO event. Anthony Dowd continued to lower his record as North Americas fastest All-Motor MK3 VR6, by running 12.06 @ 109mph in his 98 GTI. As well as becoming the first Watercooled VW to qualify for an NHRA Import Event. Bernd Arndt in his VR6 Rabbit became North America's fastest All-Motor VR6 by running 11.56 @ 116mph. Finally, Bill Warburton set out at the beggining of the season with a goal to run 13's, with stock cams,no headwork, stock clutch, diff, tranny. After a slow start but with consistancy, including winning a coveted "Wally" Trophy for winning Brackets at the NHRA Import event at ATCO. Just last month after having 2 close calls in brackets running 14.0's lifting, he ran the number 13.98 @ 98mph. Dropping a few more pounds and using the newly found knowledge he was able to get down to 13.83 @ 99mph. Included his efforts was a few 100+mph traps. Congrats on setting the goal and becoming the 1st to achieve it. Congrats to all of the above mentioned and to any others who got out and raced there VW during the 2002 race season. Lets continue in 2003 and show the rest of the imports what VW's can do.
