roll cage in a convertible
by laith

Ok...so it probably isn't all that hardcore, but some day it might be. In the meantime I am planning some body/other work for the car and I want to put in a six point bar system. The interior will probably be gutted and I am thinking of a hoop just behind the factory hoop, about where the seat belt mounting points are, with diagonals tieing in to the rear shock towers and a low brace to the footwell area. Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Roll bar
by Dolemite

I'd suggest getting an NHRA rule book and doing it right,Any convertable running 13.99 or quicker needs a roll bar to be NHRA leagal.

saab 9000 turbo????junk or not?
by brandon

hi i just got a free turbo from a 86 saab 9000. the guy who gave it to me does not know anything about it and neither do i, i would like to put it on my gti, but i was looking at it and think i know why it was laying around his shop. when you spin the propeller shaft it moves freely but if you grab it, it wiggles back and forth.now does that mean the thing is junk or just needs rebuilt or is that ok, again i'm knew to turbo's. any info would help and if you could tell me about the turbo like what boost it is at and whatnot that would also be good. any thing you can tell me about a 87 saab 9000 turbo it's a garret unit and says A/R 42 on the side and has an external wastegate let me know thank you very much oh wise ones.

That turbo is good for flowing about 160 total hp worth of air,It's an internal wastegate set at 6 psi.

How much?
by justin

How much pressure can that Garret unit provide with a boost controller? Also, how much pressure can a stock VW bottom end take? I've seen people pushing 20-22psi at the track with bad turn outs. How about street driven max pressure? I just wanna know how far I can go?

How Far
by TurboTom

How far you push the motor depends on your compression, what kind of gas you are using, and the condition of the motor. If you are talking about the 16V with piston oilers street wise i would go no more than 15 psi with 8.5:1 comp. and no more than 8 psi with 10:1 comp. Make sure you have plenty of fuel. The motors are strong if you don't lean it out you can probably go as high as you want because the head gasket will probably go first.

trade heads?
by seth

I have at least one 8V 1984 GTI head that is solid lifter. I would like to trade it with someone for a hydraulic GTI head. I am being told that a mechinaical head will mess up the stock knock sensing ignition. Please e-mail me directly if you want to swap.

Keep the valves adjusted and the solid lifter head is better. If you want to trade let me know.

heard it both ways
by seth

I have heard both ways that a mech lifter head will OR will not fool the knock sensor into thinking it heard a ping. I am not quite sure who to believe, but I am thinking it's ok.

Adsjust the valves
by Dolemite

If someones valves are making THAT much noise, maybe they need to be adjusted..........Solid lifter are better for extreme rpm,But I doubt anyone here is going past 8k anyway..........

cam confusion
by jerry

if they had that much problem, my guess
is they used a hyd.cam on a solid lifter
head. the solid lifter cam has a "ramp"
that opens the valve gently. the hyd. cam
doesn't have the ramp because the slap of
the cam opening the valve is absorbed by
the hyd. lifter. go with what you have.
measure it and make sure it hasn't been

turbo leak?
by vlksdragon

I pulled my Rajay off the other day, because the car has not been idling at all. After I pulled it off, I noticed that five of the six allen head
bolts holding the compressor housing onto the other half (where the outlet goes) were finger loose and the gasket was blown out. Would this cause a major vacuum leak and not let the car idle after it's warmed up?
Any help is appreciated because I beginning to not remember what having boost was like....

Snow an Go
by Anonymous

Well Englishtown was a bust. Anyone trekking down to MD for the show in Monrovia? Someone told me there will be racing there. I wasn't planning on going, but I have been itching to see some other dubs. This is two shows in a row cancelled (IceFest and the Show and Go) Was hoping to see some quick cars there on sunday too. Heard that POS (Kevin Black) was running deep into the twelves Sat, on a backup tranny, breakin off crazy honda fools.

Vulva intercooler
by skeet

I got the Volvo Intercooler mounted today. It was a bitch!! The bottom portion of IC about a 1.5 inches actually hangs out of the front of the car. It will be covered by the stock 84 GTI front spoiler. I had to notch the front core support and move the radiator over toward the passenger side 1.25 inches. The radiator and the IC are tilted back towards the engine a little. This IC has plastic end tanks the first I have ever seen.

if you ever get a chance, check out an Audi S4 intercooler, very nice size and plastic end tanks also.

plastic end tanks
by justin

audi 5000 turbos also have plastic end tanks. I'm not sure it they can withstand high boost though. My IC has full aluminum, I pulled it from a Saab.

How much bhp
by VW

I have a G60 engine which I will convert to turbo.
How much bhp can I get out of this engine , with a cam, a Stage 1 porting, intercooler, and of course the turbo.
I guess it's just to raise the psi to get more power , but where goes the limit of such an engine. I've planned to run 14 psi, how much more can it take stock, any ideas about the power output? What about a stock 16v 1.8 engine?

I saw on the 8vturbo.com they had a kit to convert a G60 to "turbo G60". Is this just for the fun of it, or does it have any advantages?

Thanks for a great site!

G60 HUH!!
by Chuck B (UFO)

In my experience with G60's the #3 rod needs more oil at about 200 hp.Cross drill the crank and put in ARP or Raceware rod bolts, and you should be good for more than I have experience with.Ask Lewie,YUK YUK YUK.
